"Little stream, woods"

"Little stream, woods"

In continuation with my quest to make photographs outside my comfort zone, I captured more scenes in ‘portrait’ orientation on my recent trip. I have invariably photographed in landscape mode. I am not quite sure why, but maybe it is because we usually ‘see’ by scanning from left to right, or vice versa. Up and down is more of a special case scenario maybe? Or it could just be plain laziness, because setting up a tripod in portrait orientation requires an additional step!

Whatever the case may be, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I do think shooting landscapes vertically is a bit of a challenge, because you need to pay particular attention to the top and bottom parts of your composition.

This particular little scene I quite liked. It had lovely details and gentle contrasts. The dead tree right up front, a smaller, living one next to it, and a lovely babbling stream running alongside. The dead, the dying, the reborn, and the element that nourishes every living thing on this plant - I am not sure I saw all that before I made the picture, but the wonderful thing about photography is that the heart often speaks well before the mind, and all you need is to listen for its gentle voice.
