"Rock on trail"

These are the oak forests of the Western Himalayas. They are dense, sometimes impenetrable, and often foreboding. There is history here in a scale that is sometimes difficult for the human mind to comprehend. They date back to the beginning of the Pleistocene age, making them well over two million years old.
One would think that these ancient forests, having survived both the passage of time and the more recent threats posed by mankind, would last forever. That is however not the case, for these oak trees are being superseded by the pine tree.  The reason behind this is complex - a combination of climate change, forest fires and manmade conditions. In these silent forests, the ongoing struggle of survival never ends.
