"Shepard settlement"
You sometimes come across little settlements like these while exploring the Ladakh region of the Himalayas. They are inhabited by semi nomadic shepherds and their herds of Yaks. In these harsh and unforgiving landscapes, they live off the land, and do so without desecrating it. A little later, I wandered down to one of the little huts to chat with a shepherd who was enjoying his morning cup of tea. I asked him directions to a little lake that was reachable only by foot. “You’ve come all this way just to see this little lake?” he asked me, completely befuddled.
For his sake, and ours, I hope that these places will remain the way they are, where scenes of beauty, grace and splendor are just humdrum everyday occurrences, just stuff you pass by while on your way to work, tending to your herd.
